1. What It Is: Methanol (CH₃OH), also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol, is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid used widely in industry and energy.

2. Key Properties: - Formula: CH₃OH - Boiling Point: ~64.7°C - Solubility: Fully miscible in water - Toxicity: Highly toxic if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed

3. Applications:

Fuel: - Used in blending with gasoline or as an alternative fuel - Basis for biodiesel production

Industrial Use: - Raw material for formaldehyde, acetic acid, and plastics - Used in solvents, antifreeze, paints, and adhesives

Energy Sector: - Employed in methanol-to-olefins (MTO) for plastics - Used in marine fuel and fuel cells (as a cleaner alternative)

4. Environmental Note: - Biodegradable, but harmful in large quantities - Can be produced from natural gas, biomass, or CO₂ + H₂ (green methanol)
