1. What It Is:
Light Cycle Oil (LCO) is a byproduct of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) in oil refineries. It’s a middle distillate similar to diesel but typically of lower quality. LCO is used mainly in diesel blending and heating fuels, and sometimes as a feedstock in petrochemical production.
2. Key Properties:
- Density: ~0.85–0.90 kg/L
- Boiling Range: 200–360°C
- Sulfur Content: Typically high (can vary widely)
- Cetane Number: Low (~30–40), which affects combustion quality
- Color: Clear to dark yellow or amber
3. Applications:
Diesel Blending:
- Blended with diesel to increase volume (may require hydrotreating)
Industrial Heating Fuel
Feedstock for Hydrocracking Units or Aromatics Extraction
4. Advantages:
- Useful as a low-cost blending component
- Readily available in refineries with FCC units
- Contains high aromatic content, valuable for some petrochemical uses
5. Limitations:
- Low cetane and high sulfur limit direct use in high-standard diesel markets
- Requires further processing to meet EN590 or ULSD standards
- Not suitable for modern engines without upgrading
6. Storage & Handling: - Stored in tanks or drums
- Handle with care; may emit fumes
- May require desulfurization before certain uses
