1. What It Is:D6 diesel, also called Residual Fuel Oil or Bunker Fuel, is a heavy fuel oil used mainly in large industrial engines, ships, and power plants. It’s much thicker than other diesel types like D2 or D4 and often requires preheating before use
2. Key Characteristics:
- Type: Residual (bottom of the barrel fuel)
- Viscosity: Very high; must be heated to flow
- Flash Point: ~130°C
- Sulfur Content: Can vary – usually high unless it's a low sulfur version
- Pour Point: ~−6°C to 30°C (needs heating in cold climates)
- Ash Content: Max ~0.1%
- Water Content: Max ~0.5%
3. Applications:
- Marine vessels (as bunker fuel)
- Power generation in industrial boilers or turbines
- Large stationary engines (factories, remote facilities)
4. Variants:
- Virgin D6: Not blended, direct from refining (more desirable)
- Low Pour D6: Modified to improve cold flow
- D6 LS: Low sulfur version (to meet IMO/MARPOL or local air standards)
5. Market & Trade Notes:
- Traded in bulk volumes (tanks, ships)
- Major sources: Russia, Venezuela, USA, Caribbean
- Usually delivered under FOB, CIF, or TTO terms
- Requires SGS or Q&Q inspection at port
- Important Note:
D6 is not suitable for automotive use due to its heavy composition. It's regulated heavily in ports and countries with environmental laws (e.g. MARPOL Annex VI).
