1. What It Is:
Bitumen, also known as petroleum asphalt, is a black, viscous, semi-solid or liquid hydrocarbon derived from the distillation of crude oil. It is primarily used in road construction and waterproofing applications.
2. Key Grades:
Bitumen is classified by viscosity, penetration, or performance, depending on regional standards. Common grades include:
- Penetration Grade: 40/50, 60/70, 80/100, etc.
- Viscosity Grade (VG): VG-10, VG-20, VG-30, VG-40
- Performance Grade (PG): PG 64-22, PG 76-22 (used in North America)
- Oxidized/Blown Bitumen: 85/25, 90/40 (used in roofing & insulation)
- Cutback and Emulsion Bitumen: For cold weather or temporary works
3. Key Properties:
- Highly adhesive and waterproof
- Softens when heated, hardens when cooled
- Resistant to weather, chemicals, and aging
- Density: ~1.0–1.05 g/cm³
- Flash Point: >230°C (depending on grade)
5. Advantages:
- Durable, weather-resistant material
- Recyclable in road construction
- Wide range of industrial and civil applications
6. Packaging & Storage:
- Supplied in bulk, drums, or polybags
- Stored at controlled temperatures (especially for oxidized grades)
- Must be handled with safety due to high-temperature requirements
