1. What It Is: Base oil is the primary raw material used in the production of lubricants, such as engine oils, greases, and hydraulic fluids. It is derived from refined crude oil or synthetic processes, and serves as the foundation for blending with additives.

2. Classification (API Groups):

Group I: - Solvent refined - Low performance, used in industrial oils - Saturates <90%, sulfur >0.03%, VI: 80–120

Group II: - Hydro processed - Better oxidation stability - Saturates ≥90%, sulfur ≤0.03%, VI: 80–120

Group III: - Severely hydrocracked - Considered synthetic in some markets - VI >120, very high purity

Group IV: - PAO (Polyalphaolefin) - Fully synthetic, high performance - Excellent for high/low temperatures

Group V: - All other types (esters, PAG, etc.) - Used in specialty lubricants

3. Applications: - Automotive oils (engine, gear, transmission) - Industrial lubricants - Hydraulic fluids, greases, metalworking oils - Transformer oils

4. Key Properties: - Viscosity Index (VI) - Pour Point - Oxidation Stability - Flash Point - Color and Purity

5. Packaging & Storage: - Supplied in bulk, drums, or IBCs - Store in cool, dry, and clean conditions to prevent contamination
