1. What It Is:
JP-5 is a military-grade aviation fuel primarily used by naval aircraft, especially those operating from aircraft carriers. It is a type of kerosene-based jet fuel with a high flash point for increased safety.
2. Key Characteristics:
- Flash Point: Minimum 60°C (higher than Jet A or JP-8)
- Freezing Point: −46°C
- Density: ~0.788 kg/L
- Color: Clear to straw-colored
- Additives: Includes corrosion inhibitors, anti-icing agents, and static dissipaters
3. Applications:
- Navy aircraft (e.g. fighter jets, helicopters)
- Aircraft carrier operations due to high flash point
- Used where fire safety is critical
4. Advantages:
- High flash point reduces risk of onboard fires
- Suitable for storage in confined shipboard spaces
- Meets MIL-DTL-5624U military fuel standard
5. Differences from Jet A1/JP-8:
- JP-5 has higher flash point than both
- JP-8 (used by the U.S. Air Force) is more like Jet A1 but with military additives
- Jet A1 is mostly for commercial aircraft
