ETHYLENE TAR

1. What It Is: Ethylene tar is a dark, viscous byproduct formed during the production of ethylene via steam cracking of hydrocarbons (like naphtha or ethane). It is part of the pyrolysis fuel oil stream and is similar in appearance and properties to heavy fuel oil or pitch.

2. Composition: - Contains heavy aromatic hydrocarbons, olefins, and unsaturated compounds - High in carbon content, low in volatility - Typically includes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

3. Key Properties: - Color: Dark brown to black - Consistency: Thick, sticky, semi-solid to liquid - Boiling Point: Very high (non-distillable in standard ranges) - Viscosity: Very high - Sulfur content: Variable - High calorific value

4. Applications: - Fuel substitute in cement kilns, industrial furnaces, and boilers - Binder in road construction or roofing (when processed) - May be used in the production of carbon black or further refined into pitch

5. Advantages: - Cost-effective fuel with high energy content - Utilizes a waste byproduct from ethylene plants - Can be modified for industrial uses

6. Limitations & Hazards: - Contains toxic and carcinogenic compounds (PAHs) - Requires careful handling and storage - Not suitable for use without treatment or blending
